Every family is different and for some, the essentials for a great holiday will differ widely from what others would choose. Here we look at the essentials and also some not so essentials!

12 volt appliances for caravans

  • When camping, particularly off-grid, a cool box is indispensable. The Milenco My Coolman Cooler/Warmer is the perfect cool box as it runs off 12 volt and 240 volt (with a 12 volt converter) making it ideal for pitches with hook-up access. With a 9.5 litre capacity, the cool box will cool to 18 degrees below ambient and will warm up to 40 degrees above ambient temperature.
  • On an extended camping trip, the last thing you want is for your leisure battery to let you down. The Milenco Optimate Solar Battery Charger is an efficient solar pulse charge system that needs no access to a mains supply in order to provide long-term maintenance on all 12 volt leisure batteries. The battery charger has an extra-long charging lead for roof to battery box connection and comes with a three year warranty.
  • You’ve finally arrived at your destination, but it’s late and dark and all you want to do is go to bed. But you still have to get the airbeds ready and the last thing you want to do is stand with a foot pump. The Kampa Twister 12V/240V Pump inflates and deflates and is supplied with an assortment of adaptors for use with most inflatables. This versatile pump is great for airbeds, dinghies and inflatable toys.
  • Do you have someone coming on holiday who cannot live without their hair dryer or hair straighteners, even on holiday? The Streetwize 12V Hair Dryer and matching Streetwize 12V Hair Straighteners may well be the answer to your prayers! Both will operate from a 12 volt socket and the hairdryer has two speed settings, while the straighteners will heat up to 190°C.

Appliances for electric hook up

Anyone pitching up with access to electric hook up must remember that while you can use ‘normal’ 240 volt appliances (as at home), you must take into account the wattage of the appliance, so as not to overload the site’s supply. In these cases, you need low wattage appliances such as our range of kettles and toaster, and our selection of ovens and hobs, both of which are suitable for touring caravans. Can you use normal electrical appliances in a caravan? is a really useful blog post that explains everything you need to know about voltage, wattage and current in amps, in more detail.
